Folktale Week: The Hare

Illustration series November 2025

Folktale Week is an annual online illustration challenge built around daily single-word prompts. Participants respond to each prompt with a new piece across the week, either illustrating an existing folktale or creating their own original story. I created my own story of a hare weathering a wave of difficult emotion.

I - NIGHT

Noticing the darkness rolling in. Bracing for the wave of what's coming. Fear and courage.

II - ECHO

Pulled into the dark echo chamber of your its own thoughts, fears and negative talk echo back at the hare getting louder and louder. The hare stands alone on an isolated island looking down at its own distorted reflection. A shadow of its own making looms above.

III - RAIN

Sadness overwhelms, distorting the hare's view of itself.

IV - CHARM

Holding on to something solid. A ritual, a reminder, a tether. The stone emits a light, casting a protective spell and keeping the sharp thorns at bay.

V - STORM

Endurance.

VI - DAWN

The storm clouds begin to pass and dawn's warm light breaks through. A glimmer of hope, relief. Joy begins to bloom again, echoing the colour of the charm's light used to make it through the night.
